AMAZON CREEK HOUSING

This housing development project Is located in Eugene, spanning an entire block between Olive and Willamette, and between 15th ave. and 16th. Ave. Its unique location gives opportunities for both commercial spaces and housing while also having an opportunity to highlight the natural landscape. This block is divided by Amazon Creek, a local body of water that goes throughout Eugene and most of downtown. In areas where it goes through more urban settings it is paved and has concrete elements added in order to reduce flooding. This project looks to rehabilitate the creek along with creating affordable housing and community opportunities for the indigenous population within Eugene. The Kalapuyan people who used to occupy the land now only represent one percent of its population, but 4.5% of its homeless population. Housing within this site looks to create affordable opportunities for those moving from reservations, and give them flexible living arrangement. A unique aspect of this design is the Children's Science Center located along the creek. This feature hopes to educate people both on nature, and the Kalapuya people, in a fun and interactive setting.

The design of the buildings within the site is inspired by the Kalapuyans connection to nature and their knowledge of how to live cohesively with the land. The outer edges of the buildings conform to the colonial grid while the inner edges move and fluctuate with the natural elements. This created the free flowing, curvilinear design of the interior courtyard which aspires to revert the land back to its natural beauty.
