BUB X:

UNIVERSAL

UNIVERSITY

BUB X is an innovative design approach, looking to change the way in which universities are structured, and how students learn. Located on the Eastside Portland waterfront, BUB X embraces the Portland student through an immersive housing and student hub experience. It re-envisions how students learn in the wake of COVID-19 through new learning opportunities and interactive student programs. By simultaneously embracing nature and tech, BUB-X encourages students to embrace the new technology they've been given while also celebrating and engaging with their surrounding environment.

Bub X is located on the eastside of Portland, Oregon and is directly adjacent to the Willamette River. The waterfront walkway spans across the edge of the site, connecting the community to this area, and allowing easy access for bikers, runners, and walkers. This area has been home to a vibrant ecosystem, and an eclectic community that needed to be showcased in the design of BUB-X.

TECH EXHIBITION

The tech exhibition space is located at the crux of the valley, signifying the transition from nature to tech. This space is a way for students to interact with tech science and industry in a new way. It is designed so that students can showcase what they've been working on, while simultaneously getting to experience new tech such as VR, Drones, or learning tech.

LEARNING TYPES DIAGRAM 2.jpg

THE LEARNING CORRIDOR

The learning corridor splits students up into the 7 learning types; social, auditory, kinesthetic, logical, solitary, verbal, and visual. The traditional college campus separates students into their majors which does not allow for cross collaboration or communication between different fields. By splitting students up into the ways they learn instead of what they are learning, BUB-X gives them the opportunity to work and live with people who they might have never had the opportunity to at a traditional campus.

The learning corridor creates a gradient between the learning types, fading from social to solitary, and placing similar learning types next to one another. Each learning zone is designed with modular, movable furniture, designed to suit the needs of those specific students. The visual learning zone is retrofitted with interactive screens, and the verbal learning space has an amphitheater.
