Human eyes perceive color through three types of photoreceptors. The rainbow mantis shrimp has sixteen —it doesn't just see more colors; it processes light in ways fundamentally outside human comprehension. Shrimp Vision sits with that strangeness.
The centerpiece is a pair of large eyeballs, each built from a lattice of 3D-printed hexagons joined by iridescent vinyl. Embedded in each eye is a live camera; a trackball invites visitors to rotate the eyes, reorienting their perspective in real time. The surrounding sculpture pieces act as pinpoints around the room for participants to engage with.
This installation was part of the 2026 Yale CCAM fellowship program, and was displayed in the isovist gallery as part of the showcase event.
