URBAN RESIDENCY

Set in downtown Eugene, this new building will provide housing with a commercial space below. By creating the central open air space, the surrounding buildings are unified in form and purpose, for commercial and residential use. Two reflecting pools in the interior courtyard anchor and interlock the reciprocal structures developed around them – seating, patio, stairways, and living units are balanced in duality, interlinked and reciprocal. The reflecting pools are the grounding element that everything else revolves around. Air, water and light coalesce in this outdoor room inviting residents to sit, congregate, and relax in their private communal area before entering their living spaces.

As residents move through the building the gradient of the roof allows light to enter throughout, integrating the outdoor and indoor, and complementing the gradual transition between public and private areas. Once you’ve entered the bedrooms the roof form is almost lifting of the structure, letting in ample light and adding to the spatial complexity of the room. The residential unit adjacent to the ground floor living space provides the option of working and living within one unit by providing accessible flow between the two. Throughout the building, light and air are modulated by the interlinked and reciprocal structures which create a confluence of serene living with urban access.
